Juneau Police Records Overview
Juneau Police Department Records
The Juneau Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency for the city and borough. Their Records Unit handles requests for incident reports, case documents, and related records. JPD does not accept verbal records requests. Every request must be in writing and submitted on the department's approved form.
You can find the Electronic Records Request Form on the JPD website. You can also visit the department in person at 6255 Alaway Avenue, Juneau AK 99801. For questions, call the Records Supervisor at 907-586-0620. The non-emergency line is 907-586-0600.
JPD accepts delivery of requests by US mail, electronically, or in person. They aim to give a status update within 5 business days. Requests are handled on a first-come, first-served basis. Keep in mind that as of recent reporting, the department is short-staffed, so wait times may run longer than usual. If your request is time-sensitive, note that in your submission.
What Information You Need to Provide
JPD requires specific details to process a request. Be ready to give your full name, Social Security number, and date of birth. You should also provide the date and location of the incident, the case or incident number if you have it, and a reason for the request. The more specific you are, the faster the process tends to go.
Not all records are public. Open or pending cases are not available. If a suspect has been identified but not yet adjudicated, those records are also not released. Third-party reports that JPD received from outside agencies, such as hospitals or fire departments, are not provided. Confidential information is redacted from any records that are released, per applicable law.
If records were sealed or expunged, JPD's policy is to respond that no records exist for that person. Media outlets have the same access rights as the general public. There is no separate press exception for police records in Juneau.
JPD Records Management
JPD stores records in locked metal cabinets and uses a records management system to track files. All dissemination of records is logged. This means there is a paper trail when records are released. If you believe a request was improperly denied, you can raise that with JPD's Records Supervisor or file a complaint under the Alaska Public Records Act.

Alaska currently has more than 3,640 registered sex offenders in the state. The registry is governed by AS 12.63.100, with updates from HB 66 taking effect in July 2024. Alaska State Troopers - Juneau
The Alaska State Troopers serve areas outside Juneau's municipal jurisdiction and assist JPD on major cases. AST operations in Southeast Alaska fall under Detachment A, which is headquartered at 7366 N. Tongass Highway in Ketchikan. The Juneau AST post can be reached at 907-465-4000.
AST also runs the Daily Dispatch, a public log of recent law enforcement activity from around the state. If you're looking for recent incident information from AST rather than JPD, Daily Dispatch is updated regularly and covers trooper-handled calls statewide.
For online crime reporting of certain non-emergency incidents, AST provides a form at the DPS website. This is for crimes where no suspect is present and immediate response is not needed. Not all incident types qualify for online reporting.

Alaska Public Records Act
All public records requests in Alaska are governed by the Alaska Public Records Act, found at AS 40.25.100 through AS 40.25.295. Agencies must respond within 10 business days. If the full response will take longer, they must notify you of the delay and give an estimated completion date. More details about the act are at law.alaska.gov/doclibrary/APRA.html.
If an agency denies your request, you can appeal that decision. Denials must state the legal basis for withholding records. Common exemptions include active criminal investigations, personnel files, and records that would identify confidential informants. If you think a denial was improper, the Alaska Department of Law publishes guidance on how to challenge it.
