Search Sitka City and Borough Police Records
Sitka City and Borough is a unified government on Baranof Island in Southeast Alaska, and police records here flow primarily through the Sitka Police Department at 304 Lake Street. Because the city and borough share a single government structure, there is one main records pathway for police documents rather than two separate offices. For records that are not police reports, the Municipal Clerk handles requests. This page covers how to get incident reports from SPD, how the Municipal Clerk's process works for other city documents, and how to use statewide tools including the criminal history portal and CourtView for broader searches related to Sitka.

Municipal Clerk Public Records Process
For records that are not police reports, the Municipal Clerk is the right contact. The Sitka public records request page explains the process. Municipal Clerk Sara Peterson oversees records management for the City and Borough of Sitka. Submit requests by email to clerk@cityofsitka.org.
Multiple departments have records that can be requested through the Clerk's process. These include Police (non-report documents), Fire, Finance, Assessing, Harbor, Legal, Public Works, Electric, Human Resources, and the Municipal Clerk's own records. If the Clerk's office cannot locate a record you have requested, they will notify you. This is different from a denial; it means the record was not found in their system, and you may need to clarify your request or try a different department.
Many records are already posted online at www.cityofsitka.com. Meeting minutes, agendas, ordinances, and similar documents are often available without a formal request. Check the city website before filing a request to see whether what you need is already public. This saves time for both you and the Clerk's office.

Police reports are not routed through the Municipal Clerk; use the SPD forms page for those.
Alaska Public Records Act in Sitka
All records requests in Sitka, whether to SPD or the Municipal Clerk, fall under the Alaska Public Records Act, codified at AS 40.25.100 through 40.25.295. The Act gives agencies up to 10 working days to respond to a records request. If more time is needed, the agency must notify you of the delay and give an estimated date for the response.
If you believe a records request has been wrongly denied, you have the right to appeal. Appeals go to the agency head within 60 working days of the denial. The APRA also sets limits on what agencies can charge for records, though reasonable costs for copying and research time are allowed. SPD may charge for research time on complex requests that require staff to manually search archived records.
Some records are exempt from disclosure under Alaska law. These include active investigation files, records whose release would endanger a person's safety, and certain personnel records. Redactions are common in police reports, where victim names, witness information, and personal identifying details may be removed before the record is released to a requester who is not the subject of the record.
Note: The APRA appeal deadline is 60 working days, not 60 calendar days; make sure you count only business days when calculating your window to appeal a denial.
Criminal History and Statewide Records Tools
The Alaska DPS criminal history portal gives you access to statewide criminal records. A name-based search costs $20. A fingerprint-based search costs $35 and is more thorough since it matches records by biometric data rather than name spelling. Both types operate under AS 12.62.110-120. Contact the DPS Criminal Records Bureau at 907-269-5767 or dps.criminalrecords@alaska.gov with questions about your request.
For court records, CourtView provides free public case searches. Sitka cases appear in the First Judicial District. You can search by name or case number. CourtView shows case history, filing dates, and outcome information for criminal and civil matters. Court document copies are $5 for the first page and $3 for each additional page. Certified copies cost $10 plus $3 per page. Research time runs $30 per hour at the court clerk's office.

The Alaska DPS Daily Dispatch at dailydispatch.dps.alaska.gov lets you search state trooper call logs by date range or incident number.
