Alaska State Troopers in Yakutat Borough

Yakutat is one of the most remote communities in Southeast Alaska. Access is by air or sea only. The Alaska State Troopers Yakutat Post is the sole law enforcement agency covering the borough. There are no city or borough police departments here. The post number is (907) 784-3206. The post falls under Detachment A, whose headquarters is at 7366 N. Tongass Highway, Ketchikan AK 99901. Detachment A covers all of Southeast Alaska including Yakutat, Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, and Wrangell.

For non-emergency matters when the Yakutat Post is not staffed, contact Detachment A headquarters or the DPS main line at (907) 269-5511. The post handles all general law enforcement calls and documents incidents within the borough. Major crimes may involve coordination with Detachment A command or the Alaska Bureau of Investigation. Because the community is small and access is limited, response times and records processing can sometimes take longer than in road-connected communities.

Online crime reports can be filed at dps.alaska.gov/AST/CrimeReport for burglary, trespassing, fraud, property damage, shoplifting, telephonic harassment, and theft. This option is useful when getting to the post in person is not practical. Incidents involving firearms, drugs, or vehicle theft must be reported by phone. For emergencies, call 911.

How to Request Yakutat Borough Police Records

The Alaska Public Records Act at AS 40.25.100 through AS 40.25.295 gives any person the right to inspect or copy public records held by state agencies, including AST. Records must be open during regular office hours. You do not need to state a reason for your request. The agency has 10 working days to respond. If the agency needs more time, it must notify you in writing with an explanation.

To get police records from the Yakutat Borough, submit a written request to the Yakutat Post at (907) 784-3206 or by mail to Detachment A headquarters. Include the date and location of the incident, any report or case number you have, and the full names of the people involved. A written request is more reliable than a phone call. You can submit by mail, which is often the most practical method given Yakutat's remote location. There is no required form for APRA requests to AST.

Some records are exempt from release under AS 40.25.120, including records that could interfere with active criminal investigations and juvenile records. Criminal records are handled under a separate statute, AS 12.62.160. If a request is denied, you have 60 working days to appeal to the agency head. A denial of that appeal can be challenged in Superior Court. Research fees apply when a request takes more than five person-hours of staff time per month. Amounts up to $50 are due at pickup; amounts over $50 must be prepaid.

Note: Given the remote location of the Yakutat Post, mail submissions may be the most practical way to submit records requests and receive responses.

The Alaska CourtView portal allows free public searches of district and superior court cases statewide. You can search by name, case number, or date range. CourtView is a court filing database, not a criminal history report. It shows filings, hearing dates, charges, and documented outcomes. It does not include the underlying police reports.

Under AS 22.35.030, certain records do not appear in CourtView. Sealed cases, juvenile matters, and acquittals or dismissals more than 60 days old are removed. If you cannot find a case, contact the clerk of court directly for the relevant courthouse. The Alaska Trial Courts directory has current contact details and addresses for courthouses that serve the Yakutat area.

Copies of court documents cost $5 for the first page and $3 per page after that. Certified copies are $10 plus $3 per additional page. Staff research time is $30 per hour when extended work is needed. Requests can be submitted to the clerk of court by mail, fax, email, or in person.

The Alaska CourtView case search portal is the primary public tool for looking up district and superior court records tied to Yakutat Borough incidents.
